FROSTED Gold had to share the spoils with Tiffany Moon in the Storm Bird Stakes over 1000m at Turffontein on Saturday, but he has a quick Listed win to his name all the same and is likely to be prepared now for the SA Nursery on Derby Day.
Frosted Gold was in touch with the pace early on, but against the hopes and visions of his supporters he wasn’t a few lengths clear going into the business end. Instead, Gavin Lerena had to work had to keep him focused and on the chase. He responded late to rally and force the dead-heat.
Mathew de Kock commented: “We expected Frosted Gold to outpace his rivals like he did last time and he didn’t, which was surprising. But the good thing was that he fought back well to get a share of the win and that’s encouraging. It looks like wants a bit more ground.”
Some punters would have considered Gin Fizz’s second to Basadi Faith in the Listed Ruffian Stakes somewhat disappointing, but she was beaten by a smart filly who hasn’t had anything resembling a challenge yet and Mathew assessed: “We were beaten fair and square, we have no excuses. Gin Fizz ran a good second to what looks like a well above average filly.”
